Recent and future warm extreme events and high-mountain slope stability.

چکیده
The number of large slope failures in some high-mountain regions such as the European Alps has increased during the past two to three decades. There is concern that recent climate change is driving this increase in slope failures, thus possibly further exacerbating the hazard in the future. Although the effects of a gradual temperature rise on glaciers and permafrost have been extensively studied, the impacts of short-term, unusually warm temperature increases on slope stability in high mountains remain largely unexplored. We describe several large slope failures in rock and ice in recent years in Alaska, New Zealand and the European Alps, and analyse weather patterns in the days and weeks before the failures. Although we did not find one general temperature pattern, all the failures were preceded by unusually warm periods; some happened immediately after temperatures suddenly dropped to freezing. We assessed the frequency of warm extremes in the future by analysing eight regional climate models from the recently completed European Union programme ENSEMBLES for the central Swiss Alps. The models show an increase in the higher frequency of high-temperature events for the period 2001-2050 compared with a 1951-2000 reference period. Warm events lasting 5, 10 and 30 days are projected to increase by about 1.5-4 times by 2050 and in some models by up to 10 times. Warm extremes can trigger large landslides in temperature-sensitive high mountains by enhancing the production of water by melt of snow and ice, and by rapid thaw. Although these processes reduce slope strength, they must be considered within the local geological, glaciological and topographic context of a slope.

Spatial analysis of climate change in Iran
Introduction Climate change is the greatest price society is paying for decades of environmental neglect. The impact of global warming is most visible in the rising threat of climate-related natural disasters. Globally, meteorological disasters more than doubled, from an average of forty-five events a year to almost 120 events a year (Vinod, 2017). Climate change refers to changes in the distr...
متن کاملInvestigating the Trend of Changing Future Extreme Temperature of Iran by Using CMIP5 Data
The aim of this study is to investigate the trend of spatial and temporal changes in the future extreme temperature of Iran. The data used include daily data of minimum temperature and maximum temperature of CCSM4 model during the basic period of 1986-2005 and the future period of 2006-2050 under scenarios of 4.5 and 8.5 in Iran. The results of studying the trend of warm and cold extreme during...
متن کاملEstimating the Response of Extreme Precipitation over Mid-latitude
Global warming induced changes in extreme orographic precipitation are investigated using a hierarchy of models: a global climate model, a limitedarea weather forecast model, and a linear mountain-wave model. We consider precipitation changes over an idealized north-south mid-latitude mountain barrier at the western margin of an otherwise flat continent. The intensities of the extreme events on...

متن کاملTrends of Extreme Temperature Over the Lake Urmia Basin, Iran, During 1987-2014
The variability of temperature extremes has been the focus of attention during the past several decades and had a great influence on the hydrologic cycle. A long-term, high-quality daily maximum (TX) and minimum temperature (TN) of seven stations was used to determine the spatial and temporal characteristics of extreme temperature events in Lake Urmia Basin in Iran during 1987 to 2014. The RCli...
